Post Falls Fun Facts

    • Post Falls is named after Frederick Post, a German immigrant who constructed a lumber mill along the Spokane River in 1871 on land he purchased from Andrew Seltice, Chief of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. The purchase of the land is preserved in a pictograph on a granite cliff in Treaty Rock park.
    • Hydroelectric Power with a Twist: The Post Falls Dam not only generates power but also has a fish ladder designed to help fish, such as salmon and trout, pass through safely. The ladder was installed to mitigate the impact on fish migration, making Post Falls an interesting mix of nature and technology.
    • The Post Falls Train Incident: In the 1920s, a notorious incident occurred when a train derailed just outside of Post Falls. Legend has it that the train was carrying a precious cargo of rare gold, which was allegedly lost in the river. Some people still claim that the gold may have been recovered, though it’s never been confirmed, adding to Post Falls’ local mystery.
    • A Town Built on Lumber: The area around Post Falls was originally settled due to its prime location for the timber industry. Frederick Post, the city’s founder, built a sawmill near the falls, and it played a huge role in the city’s early development. The timber industry is still a point of pride for locals.
